The Well-Dressed Kindle: Knitting a Slipcover for your Kindle

kindleslipcover.jpg

I wanted to be able to throw my Kindle into a briefcase, a tote bag or a purse and not worry about it getting scratched, so I came up with this design for a knitted slipcover. I just slip it on my reading buddy and we're off.

KINDLE SLIPCASE PATTERN, aka Kindle Kozy

Materials: If you are a sock knitter, you probably have all of this on hand.

2 oz. sock (fingering weight) yarn. I recommend (for Amazon authenticity) a yarn from the Opal Rainforest collection, but 2 oz. of any sock yarn will do.

16" size 0 circular needle or needle size to achieve gauge of 8 stitches = 1 inch. Alternatively, you may use a set of double-pointed sock needles, size 0.

Instructions:

NOTE: The slipcase consists of alternating bands of ribbing (to give the case a snug fit) and stockinette stitch. It is designed to be slipped over the Kindle cover.

On circular needle, cast on 104 stitches. Join, being careful not to twist.

Band One: Knit 1 1/4" of knit two, purl two ribbing.

Band Two: Knit 1 1/4" of stockinette stitch (all knit).

Alternate these two bands until you have four bands of ribbing and three bands of stockinette stitch. Try the slipcover on the Kindle. Finish with a band of stockinette stitch to fit Kindle - this was about 3/4" for me.

Slip one half of the stitches on a #0 single pointed needle and the other half on a second #0 single-pointed needle. Use the Kitchener stitch to graft the two sets of stitches together to form a neat seam. If you don't do Kitchener, simple bind off all stitches and sew the seam together.

cool -- thanks I may not have the rainforest but I have a ton of sock yarn I am sure something will do ;)

It will give me something to work on on Wed. at knitting circle - my shawl is getting too wide now and it takes forever to do a row I swear. ;)

That is gorgeous Jan. You may be interested in a thread bout "Knitting on the Kindle" over here:

I'm sure they would like to see your handiwork.

If that link is broken (it appears so on the preview) then go to mobileread and look in the Kindle forum.

Thanks, I didn't know about the discussion on mobileread.com. Lots of other good stuff there too.
