Jeff Bezos Announces Pay-Per-View for the Kindle 2

In a surprise announcement, on Wednesday April 1st, Jeff Bezos, Chairman and CEO of Amazon.com, personally contacted owners of the Kindle 2 e-book reader via Whispernet-o-gram, reportedly to offer them a special deal on Amazon's new Pay-Per-View service designed specifically for the newest Kindle reading device.

payperview.jpgInsiders at Amazon, speaking off the record, told this reporter that the new service will - at first - include unlimited access to pay-per-view boxing and wrestling matches. If it catches on, the Seattle online shopping giant plans to expand the pay-per-view service to U.S. congressional hearings, presidential press conferences and episodes from the first three season of Battlestar Galactica.

Special one-time pay-per-view charity programs will also be offered at an additional charge. As of April 1, only one such program had been scheduled - reportedly a two-round boxing match between Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly and MSNBC's Keith Olbermann - with proceeds to go to the winner's favorite charity.

In order for the Kindle 2 to display full-motion live action color videos, a few modifications - accomplished by means of a simple firmware update - will be necessary. Crack Amazon programmers are said to be working around the clock to make the update available sometime in May 2009. No word yet on the price of the service, but analysts are predicting it will be offered on a subscription basis at a cost of $9.99 a month, including free Whispernet access.

Hi Mary, what tipped you off? Was it the new green Whispernet-o-gram technology? It does sound a little far-fetched. %^]
